The UK Sepsis Trust – Michael’s Story

Green & Co Charity Car Wash

At Green & Co, our staff choose the charities they would like to support in our fundraising events. On this occasion, it is Michael Williams’ charity choice – The UK Sepsis Trust.

MICHAEL’S STORY

Green and CoIn September 2015 my father (Kevin) received a heart transplant and after a very positive recovery period he was on the mend and felt completely revived. Just a few weeks later he came home and started getting back into the routine of normal life, slowly allowing himself to do more. Planning for the future, he was booking holidays and breaks away and we even planned to move to a smaller home with my mum and myself to make it easier for Dad, something he had always wanted to do.  Nothing was impossible.

In March 2016 my dad became unwell, showing flu like symptoms; his breathing was irregular, he had a fever and he seemed very weak. We were due to go to Blackpool for a weekend away with the entire family, which he had planned, but he was taken into our local hospital instead. My dad’s immune system was non-existent because of the transplant and this meant it was a lot harder for him to fight infection, but the hospital seemed positive that he could have some intravenous antibiotics and be home by the end of the weekend.

Days later he was becoming increasingly worse, shivering out of control; his breathing also deteriorated and, once seen by the doctor, he was taken straight to intensive care where he was put on high oxygen. He could barely talk; I remember the weather being nice and he told me to go outside, as he didn’t want me stuck inside the hospital on a nice day.

That evening, he had become worse. They called the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham (where he had the heart transplant). They wanted my dad to be transferred as soon as possible.

The following day we all traveled down and they had put my dad on a full face mask, and he battled with this mask for 12 days with no sign of any improvement – we were told that this was a record and they had not known anybody to be able to stand the mask for that long. His oxygen levels were decreasing and the doctors were trying to control the amount of Co2 in his blood.  Drugs were flown in from America and we were told that in matter of days my dad would be dancing around the room.

A few days later my dad was ventilated and sedated; he had been in Birmingham for over 30 days and at this point his blood pressure was dropping and they were using drugs to control it. It was only when we Googled this that we had first come across the words ‘Septic Shock’.

We were called to the hospital in the early hours of the morning, and told that we should prepare for the worst. We were told that my dad’s organs were shutting down and there was nothing more they could do. We lost my dad to Sepsis on May 3rd 2016.

If only we had been more aware of Sepsis, something that is so common – the THIRD biggest killer in the world! Every 3.5 seconds someone dies from Sepsis.

How could we not have known that it could have been Sepsis?

The UK Sepsis Trust is very important to us as a family now. Going back just over a year, we had never heard of Sepsis. People need to be made aware about Sepsis and how severe it can be. If only we had known about the condition, we could have asked the doctors ‘Could it be Sepsis?’

My family and I are so overwhelmed that Green & Co have chosen to hold a charity event to raise money and awareness for Sepsis Trust – a charity very close to our hearts.

We would love it if you felt you could support us and our cause by coming along to our car wash or by donating via our JustGiving page.

Charity Car Wash for The UK Sepsis Trust

Green & Co Charity Car Wash

Next Tuesday, 19 September, we will be holding a Charity Car Wash for The UK Sepsis Trust.

The Cause

The UK Sepsis Trust seeks to save lives and improve outcomes for survivors of SEPSIS by instigating political change, educating healthcare professionals, raising public awareness and providing support for those affected by this devastating condition.

Their critical expertise is based on the charity’s grassroots origins – their doctors and nurses have front line, first-hand experience of the SEPSIS problem; their passion is born of a uniquely comprehensive understanding of what needs to be done.

The urgent need to improve SEPSIS care in the UK drives their team forward as they continue to work in hospitals whilst giving their time to advance the SEPSIS agenda.

Why The UK Sepsis Trust

Known as the silent killer, Sepsis has affected a number of our family and friends, and we feel it is important to not only raise as much money as we can, but also raise awareness of a charity that is on a mission to mend sepsis!

Come down anytime between 10.30am and 3.30pm and get your car squeaky clean!

Christine Green is completing LEJOG for Women V Cancer

c64338f1-ebcc-44c0-9ed9-d85a8dea5634

After receiving a bike for her 70th birthday last year, Christine Green, wife of Green & Co’s founder Hugh, felt in need of an adventure, and what could be better than to cycle from down south in Lands’ End, all the way up to her birth country, Scotland. Some of you may know this cycle as LEJOG.

With such a huge challenge, Christine was originally going to complete it without fundraising, but after a number of enquiries, she organised a JustGiving page, scrapped her PAYG phone and upgraded to a smartphone, and is even doing a daily blog.

So who is the well deserving charity? Christine decided on CAF – Women V Cancer which supports three cancers under one umbrella – breast, ovarian and cervical. This disease in any form is something we can all relate to, either personally or through family and friends and it’s one that impacts on all women from Lands’ End to John O’Groats.

Over the last 4 weeks, having planned her course using a mixture of routes from the Sustrans guide on National Cycle Networks and the Cicerone End to End route, Christine has been racking up the miles.

Now in Scotland, and nearing the finish line, we wanted to share her inspirational story. If you would like to follow Christine on her journey or support her by making a donation, please follow through to her JustGiving page using the button below.

Accountant Cycles 360 Miles and Raises £10,000 for Charity

Tour De Cymru

This weeks edition of the South Wales Argus features an article on Nick Park’s 360 mile cycle as part of the Leonard Cheshire Tour de Cymru.

A Cwmbran accountant successfully cycled 360-miles across Wales as part of the Leonard Cheshire Tour de Cymru team challenge; raising more than £10,000 in the process.

Nick Park, partner at Green & Co Accountants and Tax Advisors, braved the terrain of rural Wales as he cycled across five days from Anglesey to south east Wales, finishing at the Leonard Cheshire home in Llanhennock, near Newport.

Nick said: “It was a huge privilege to take part in the Tour de Cymru organised by Leonard Cheshire Disability to celebrate 100 years of the birth of Leonard Cheshire.”

Leonard Cheshire Disability is the second largest disability charity in the UK and it supports thousands of people by improving their opportunities and helping them to pursue their goals and to live full lives.

Nick said: “We travelled 360 miles visiting eight of the Leonard Cheshire Services in Wales. The welcome we had from the residents and staff was overwhelming. Their enthusiasm and engagement was inspiring. Many of the residents had taken part in the challenge by riding static bikes in whatever way their disability allowed. They were awarded medals for their enormous efforts and it was very emotional and humbling to see how much it meant to them. One resident at Danybryn in Cardiff said that taking part had renewed her determination to learn to walk again.”

Nick and his team has so far raised £10,537.
